Prior to digital photography, the use of filters over a camera lens, as well as filters in the darkroom process, afforded substantial control over how colors were rendered in black and white. Today’s photographic software such as Nik Silver Efex Pro, and Topaz Black and White Effects provide similar controls with image-editing on a computer.
I’ve included galleries of Hobo Jungle in both black and white and color to show the strengths of each. We live in a colorful world; so many people prefer to view photography in color. Others believe color to be rather distracting, hiding important interplay between lines, centers of interest, and other elements, that with black and white and shades of gray, bring attention to the core of the subject matter. I enjoy both color and black and white, and will leave the final verdict of choice up to the viewer by offering both.
